New Permanent Supportive Housing Community for Veterans in Summit County
Axess Family Services will be hosting a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Thompson Family Veterans Village, a new permanent supportive housing development for veterans. The ceremony will be on Thursday, June 25, at 10 AM at 1121 Exeter Rd. Akron, 44306. We look forward to bringing together project partners, community leaders, and stakeholders to celebrate this important investment in veterans and the community.
What's Planned for the Project?
The development will consist of ten single-family, one-bedroom homes, each ~800 square feet, offering veterans safe, private, and dignified housing. Each home will include a full kitchen, a combined living and dining area, private in‑unit laundry, and a full bathroom, providing residents with the stability and comfort of a permanent home. Coordinated onsite services will also be available to residents to address health needs and promote self-sufficiency, thereby supporting sustained community well-being over time.
Homes will be constructed using insulated concrete forms to ensure long-term durability, enhanced disaster resilience, and energy efficiency. The development will be supported through project-based housing vouchers, with rental revenue funding ongoing maintenance and professional property management to ensure long-term viability and quality.
How Is This Project Possible?
“This project would not have been possible without the commitment and continued support of Michael W. Thompson and the entire Thompson Family.” said Matt Slater, Director of Development at Axess Family Services. “Michael realized the vision of a Veterans Village was something he wanted to see come to fruition sooner than later for his fellow veterans.”
“It gives me great pleasure to play a small role in kicking off what will be a magnificent offering to our much deserving veterans,” explained Michael W. Thompson, CEO of MAG Management and the Montrose Auto Group. “Being a Vietnam Veteran, I understand the importance of taking care of our veterans and wanted to ensure my family and I could do something to make a difference.”
The project benefits from strong partnerships with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, Summit County Continuum of Care, the City of Akron, Veterans Service Commission of Summit County, Montrose Auto Group, The Thompson Gold Star Family Foundation, and Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati. This integrated service model ensures residents receive additional supportive services while maintaining stable housing.
