Unified Resources Recreation

Unified Resources Recreation’s (URR) mission is to enrich and empower lives. Under the umbrella of Axess Family Services, this program serves people in Portage County who have developmental disabilities. We are funded by the Portage County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Our Journey

We were founded in 2002 as an AmeriCorps program under the name POWERcorps. 2012 saw us successfully transition from AmeriCorps to a fully funded community program. We began transitioning to our new name in 2016, but we kept all the same aspects our community knows and loves.

Creating Fun and Friendship Across Portage County

With our fun-loving crew, it’s easy to make friends everywhere we go, whether it’s Playhouse Square, Kent State’s campus, or local restaurants. We also provide virtual activities. Most recently, we have been able to expand and offer a youth program for teens ages 12-17. At 18, they’re able to transition into our adult program, so people with developmental disabilities in Portage County always have opportunities for fun.

Who We Serve

URR offers a teen and an adult program. Participants must be 18 years or older for the adult program and between ages 12-17 for the teen program. Participants must be eligible for services from the Portage County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

URR must have a completed registration form, a signed understanding of the rules, an Individual Service Plan (ISP) release form, and an emergency medical form for each participant before attending events (even if attending with family or staff). Occasionally, there is a nominal charge for participation in various activities (e.g., for craft supplies) and/or admission charges for attending an event.
