Audrey’s Spotlight

March 1, 2024

March is social work month! We have asked our social workers to answer a questionnaire to spotlight their passion and commitment. Here’s Audrey’s Spotlight:

Q. What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is working with a vulnerable population of children and advocating on their behalf when they cannot do so for themselves. Essentially, I feel like we plant seeds in the children like gardeners, water, and hopefully get to watch them grow; and I have often told people that.

Q: How long have you been a social worker and why did you choose this profession?

I have now been in the field for 5 years, licensed for 3. I wanted to do something that I was passionate about, and I tried other things that just did not light a fire in me like social work does.

Q: What would you tell someone interested in becoming a social worker?

It is a very rewarding career but you have to have done your own healing work (if you have that to do) because some things can be triggering and you need to have good boundaries with clients. There are a lot of different things you can do with a generalist social work degree.

Q: How do you prioritize self-care and what does it look like for you?

I prioritize my self-care by not taking work home and I avoid anything in media or life that is extremely violent or triggering. I try to balance my home life and work as evenly as possible. I also do the cliche things like long hot baths, listen to music, yoga, hikes, etc.

Q: How do you describe Children’s Advantage to families who have never heard of it?

I would describe CA as an agency where we compassionately and professionally prioritize the mental and behavioral health needs of children and their families. We offer counseling, group therapy, art therapy, advocacy and outreach, case management services, school-based services, etc. to fit needs of many different individuals.
