Supporting Our Teens During COVID-19

May 18, 2020
Sheltering at home has been difficult for all of us, we are all trying the best we can with this new normal.
Our teens are particularly struggling right now. These societal changes may be leading them to lack communication or act out.
Stepping back to look at their point of view, you can see that they’re not stuck at home 24/7 without independence or their social circles. This is abnormal for them.
They are missing out on graduation, prom, sports seasons, and friends right now and emotional distress is completely normal for this situation.
Luckily they are resilient and this experience will make them stronger with your support. Below are some tips to best support them and understand how they’re feeling.
Support communication
- Parent with empathy and support
- Understand their frustrations
- Validate their feelings and disappointments
- Reassure them that it will be okay
Create a New Normal
- Encourage responsibility
- Stick to a schedule
- Allow for “down time”
